As you know, for the first bit of my life, I was a shelter doggie. My humans used a pet-finder app to locate me, and here we are! I will be forever thankful to my people-family for saving me—but also to the technology that led them to me! In the spirit of the season of giving, I’d like to share some options for how other people could give more pets like me a loving forever home.
Available free from the App Store for Apple or Google Play, this mobile application show beautiful full-screen slideshow images of adoptable pets near you. Narrow down your search with 70 filters like breed, gender, age size and more, including compatibility. Keep track of your favorites, without even needing to register or sign in. Share profiles of dogs, cats, barnyard animals, birds, horses, rabbits, reptiles and small and furry pets via social media or text message; and contact the shelter right from the app with a single tap!
This app allows you to search by location, breed, gender and more and view in list form or on a map. It keeps a ‘smart’ history of pets and searches, and you can save your favorites to come back later. If you can’t decide while viewing the multiple full-screen images of thousands of pets, the app features a Pet Wizard that can help you locate an animal that is perfect for you, while also helping those who are unsure about sheltered pets learn just how amazing pets like us are (if I do bark so myself). The downside of this app, however, is that it is only available for Apple products at this time.
While AllPaws too is only available on iOS devices, on the contrary it is also synchronized with a website version, AllPaws.com, for larger viewing on your desktop or laptop computers. Browse more than 200,000 pets for adoption using more than 20 search categories. Save and/or share your favorites or even post your own listings! AllPaws is owned by PetSmart, so you know it’s legit; but if that doesn’t prove it, it’s been featured by ABC News, Good Housekeeping, Forbes and more.
Around for about 20 years now, this is a tried-and-true resource for adoptable pets. Petfinder has 370,000 animals from 14,000 adoption groups that you can search locally or nationwide. You can even search from various specific shelters right from one convenient location—the Apple or Android app or corresponding website, Petfinder.com. Flag favorites and leave notes for future review, read heartwarming adoption stories like that of me and my humans, or learn more about your future pet with helpful articles on pet care, breed guides and much more!
Pets who need forever homes are often subjects of less-than-happy circumstances; lucky for us, there’s the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®. It’s a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation with more than 2 million supporters across the country who are devoted to keeping pets like me safe. You can support the organization too, by checking out the pets they have listed for adoption on their website, https://www.aspca.org/adopt-pet.
Those are just a few apps and sites out of countless options out there—which is great, because it means there are that many more opportunities for pets who need homes to find their fit. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go salivate and beg next to the huge cooked bird and other yummy goodies on the dinner table.
‘Til next time,
Your pawsitively pawesome pal Cache
